"I'm pregnant!" When we make this announcement, the excitement it generates in everyone around us is incredible, and in most cases, we are happy to bring a baby into the world. However, deep down, and even with a hint of embarrassment, we are troubled by the thought of gaining those inevitable pounds and losing the figure we've worked so hard to achieve.

The fear of being considered overweight is compounded by anxiety about what people will say, and even though we try to hide our concern, the idea of hearing "Hey, you've gained weight!" is terrifying. This concern becomes even sharper in this era of social media, where we are constantly subject to the opinions of others.

No matter your status, wealth, or fame, this happens to many of us.

Recently, the news broke that Kelly Osbourne had hidden herself for the entire nine months of her pregnancy, precisely because of "body shaming." So, if it happens to a celebrity who has all the resources to look beautiful in her Instagram photos, what can we expect for those of us who are neither famous nor wealthy?

In my case, I was happy to have my child; I had turned 30 and was more than ready. But I have to confess that the thought of those extra pounds that were starting to pile up was nagging at me. So, I understand the anxiety and discomfort that many of us may feel about this inevitable part of expecting a baby.

It's a common question among expecting mothers: how much weight can one expect to gain during pregnancy?

In my experience, what has always helped me manage anxiety is knowing what will happen in advance. The biggest fear we have is the unknown; if we know what's going to happen, we already know what we can do about it. "We can't fix what we can't face" is one of the phrases I constantly repeat to myself.

With this in mind, you need to know what the HEALTHY weight gain is for you and your baby to be healthy. The CDC has a table with the following recommendations in reference to BMI (body mass index). It should be noted that BMI is not an excellent measure of health because it only measures your weight in reference to your height and leaves out things like muscle mass. With that in mind.

Weight Gain Recommendations for Pregnant Women with One Baby:


If you were underweight before pregnancy, you should gain 28-40 pounds.

If you had an average weight before pregnancy, you should gain 25-35 pounds.

If you were overweight before pregnancy, you should gain 15-25 pounds.

If you were obese before pregnancy, you should gain 11-20 pounds.

Weight Gain Recommendations for Pregnant Women with Twins:


If you were underweight before pregnancy, you should gain 50-62 pounds.

If you had an average weight before pregnancy, you should gain 37-54 pounds.

If you were overweight before pregnancy, you should gain 31-50 pounds.

If you were obese before pregnancy, you should gain 25-42 pounds.

The next question is, "What is my BMI?" (Body Mass Index)


Once you know the weight you should gain, take control of your body so you can enjoy your pregnancy. After all, remember that you are a walking miracle as you are creating another human being within you.

Many pregnant women experience anxiety about gaining weight during pregnancy. How can we address this issue?

According to life therapist Jasmin Terrany, LMHC, who is also the author of the book "Extraordinary Mommys" and a mother of two, body image issues are common for women but become even more pronounced during pregnancy. "Trust the process and be consistent in your patterns and habits from the beginning," suggests Jasmin. Here are some tips she suggests incorporating during your pregnancy.


  • Focus on your routines: As I mentioned before, knowing what will happen next helps control your anxiety.

  • Maintain an active lifestyle: If you need motivation to stay active during pregnancy, the expert mentions some benefits. For example, exercising reduces the risk of pregnancy complications, releases endorphins that elevate your mood, and actually prepares your body for faster postpartum recovery.

  • Indulge in cravings but prioritize good nutrition: Excessive weight gain during pregnancy often comes from overeating. We often hear the common saying, "You're eating for two," when in fact, a baby is not an adult, so it's not really two. In fact, your diet only requires minor adjustments during the first trimester. Aim to increase your calorie intake by about 340 to 460 calories for the rest of your pregnancy. It's important to enjoy your pregnancy, but you can do so in a smart and healthy way.

  • Practice self-kindness: Remember the enormity of what you are creating—a new life! By focusing on all the good, you'll have less space for negative thoughts. Be compassionate with yourself; the way you treat yourself will be your child's first experience of love. Set a good example.

  • Love and trust your physical journey: Since the beginning of time, women's bodies have stretched to create life and have returned to their place after giving birth to children. You must believe that your body knows exactly what to do.


"This is something beautiful and incredible that your body is doing. It's the most magical thing that happens on the planet," says life therapist Jasmin Terrany.

We deserve to enjoy pregnancy, we deserve not to feel judged for the weight we gain during this process, and we are the ones who set the parameters for how we want to be treated. If we feel good about ourselves, what others say will make no difference and, most importantly, it won't ruin one of the greatest miracles, creating a new life.
